Downtown Pittsburgh's Safety Ambassador Program to be Managed by Block by Block

June 22, 2006

Block by Block has been selected by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership (PDP) to oversee all aspects of its newly implemented Safety Ambassador Program, to include program implementation, staff selection, training, and ongoing management.

On July 1, 2006 the area known as the Golden Triangle of downtown Pittsburgh will be safer and friendlier destination for downtown workers, residents and visitors, thanks to the nine Safety Ambassadors who will patrol the streets on foot and bicycle. The team of Safety Ambassadors will be responsible for deterring unwanted activity, addressing basic quality of life issues, observing and reporting criminal acts to the police and furthering the PDP's relationship with businesses. The Safety Ambassadors, which are dressed in royal blue shirts emblazon with the logos of the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, will augment the level of visibility provided by the Pittsburgh Police in the downtown area and will work closely to share information with downtown businesses and local authorities.

The function which sets apart Ambassadors from private security is the emphasis placed on delivering hospitality. The responsibilities of Ambassadors also include providing directions to downtown locations or recommend events, attractions and restaurants, which aims to enhance the overall downtown experience.

“This program will be a significant addition to the service offerings of the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership and will help ensure those persons who come downtown are met with a safe and friendly environment”, commented Steve Hillard, Vice President of Block by Block.

The implementation of this program comes at a great time for downtown Pittsburgh as the city serves as the backdrop for the Major League Baseball All-Star game will be hosted at PNC Park in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, July 11, 2006. While the game itself will be held on Pittsburgh 's North Shore , which is directly across the Allegheny River from the Golden Triangle, many activities, such as the MLB All Star FanFest at the downtown Convention Center, lodging, and dining will occur within the confines of the downtown service district. This will be the first significant opportunity for the Safety Ambassadors to greet and assist a major contingency of downtown visitors associated with a high profile event.

About the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership

With a history of innovative programs and initiatives to foster a welcoming, economically viable Downtown, the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership has been on a mission since 1994.

Focusing primarily on the Golden Triangle area, the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership fulfills its mission by cleaning public spaces, providing safety liaison assistance, supporting improvements and marketing Downtown as the regional business and cultural center, and the premier location to live, work, shop, dine, play and visit.

The organization achieves its mission through partnerships with businesses, property owners and other organizations. In 1997, the PDP established a business improvement district (BID). Through the BID, property owners within the Golden Triangle agree to assess themselves to pay for services, provided by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, that directly benefit Downtown Pittsburgh—such as cleaning, marketing, and transportation initiatives.

Through partnerships with individuals and organizations who share a vested interest in the future of Downtown, the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership will continue to be one of the city's strongest advocates well into the 21st century.
